Description:
Nucelis LLC, a metabolic engineering company in San Diego, CA, focused on the construction of commercially useful strains of microorganisms, as well as the development of optimized processes to take maximum commercial advantage of these organisms, is looking for a full-time Research Associate to join our Lab-scale Fermentation Team’s second shift from 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm.

Summary:
This individual will join the team to develop new methods for the efficient fermentation of bacterial and yeast strains producing high value specialty chemicals, cosmetic ingredients, and flavor and fragrance ingredients. Activities of the team will include the operation of small scale fermenters, collection and processing of production data, and harvesting of material for downstream process development. Daily tasks will include setup and breakdown of fermenters, media design and preparation, equipment monitoring and maintenance, and aseptic sample and data acquisition and analysis.

Activities include: design and preparation of large volumes of buffers and media to support microbial metabolite production; maintain and assemble 2-14 L fermenters and associated equipment; data gathering, organization and analysis, as well as participation in scale-up process development to support 200L pilot plant activities.

Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a B.S. degree in biochemical engineering, microbiology, biochemistry or related field. 1-2 years of experience in laboratory scale fermentation is desired, as is a high level of mechanical aptitude, and be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds. Candidates must also have excellent computer, communication, organization and collaborative skills.
