Nucelis has leveraged its proprietary technology (RTDSTM) and fermentation platform to produce its first family of products and is seeking a highly capable, energized and experienced Business Unit leader to join our team to direct the full range of commercialization activities required to launch our Nutrition products, and build our Nutrition franchise.

Summary:
The Nutrition business director is a critical leadership role for building our competency and presence in high-value, specialty nutrition ingredients globally. The successful candidate will work closely with our technical and business teams to identify opportunities that are aligned with our mission, vision, and sustainability strategy, and successfully commercialize these new high-value, sustainable nutritional ingredient solutions to enable growth opportunities and strengthen our competitive position.

The ideal candidate will drive and oversee the entire product-line life cycle from strategic planning, technical feasibility assessment, product development and specification determination, through product launch and commercialization. In summary, we are seeking a highly motivated, entrepreneurial and dynamic leader capable of building our business in nutritionals from the ground up.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed plans to achieve approval and sales for Nucelis’s initial nutrition segment products, Vitamin D2 and Yarrowia Flour and initiate execution of these plans to meet 2016 corporate and financial targets.
  • Partner with key team leaders to fully understand business objectives, identify opportunities, and establish shared goals to shape and implement a comprehensive Nutrition business strategy for Nucelis.
  • Collaborate with a wide variety of functional areas such as R&D, manufacturing, marketing, regulatory, procurement and commercial operations to develop products responsive to customer needs, market requirements/opportunities and differentiated versus competition.
  • Craft a “go-to-market” strategy and implementation plan to meet our goals.
  • Develop and implement the marketing plan, including branding, advertising, packaging, pricing, product positioning and expense budgets.
  • Specify market requirements for current products, potential line extensions and new product ideas by conducting market research supported by customer feedback and demand.
  • Function as the key contributor and company representative to evaluate, secure and manage distribution channel partners for the Nutrition business.

Requirements:

  • BS and/or Ph.D., in Science, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, and M.B.A preferred; experience in the nutrition industry; 10 to 12 years relevant work experience in a marketing and product sales capacity.
  • Must have strong industry connections and technical and leadership credibility within the nutrition/vitamin market space.
  • Experience with leading successful product launches, and product sales and gross profit growth within the nutritionals space. Must be able to exude excitement about the company's products and prospects, and have a passion for achieving end-to-end success by taking ideas from their conceptual stage to marketplace execution.
  • Adept at setting strategic direction with strong analytical and research capabilities to evaluate opportunities and challenges and new insights.
  • Strong ability to effectively interface and negotiate with third parties.
  • Understand and embrace the importance and value of communication and its role internally and externally.

Nucelis LLC is a metabolic engineering company in San Diego, CA, focused on the use of gene editing tools to construct commercially useful strains of microorganisms, and develop optimized fermentation and chemical processes to maximize their commercial advantage. Nucelis is seeking a highly capable and experienced Fermentation Specialist to join our Fermentation team.

Summary:
This individual will join a cross-functional team developing efficient and economic fermentation processes utilizing yeast and bacterial strains for the commercial production of high value specialty chemical ingredients for cosmetic, nutrition or flavor and fragrance applications. Activities include:

  • Design, planning and execution of fermentation experiments at lab and pilot scale (500mL-200L)
  • Fermentor preparation, sterilization and turnaround; aseptic sample collection and processing
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance of fermentors and associated equipment
  • Data acquisition and analysis; communication of experimental results
  • Harvest, treatment and processing of broth for downstream process development

The successful candidate will help develop and implement procedures to increase fermentation reproducibility and throughput, install and commission new equipment, and participate in the transfer of improved fermentation technology to manufacturing scale.

Requirements:

  • B.S./M.S. in Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, or related discipline with 5+ years of fermentation-related experience in an entrepreneurial setting.
  • Candidate must possess a high level of mechanical aptitude, excellent communication, organization and collaborative skills, and demonstrated ability to innovate, troubleshoot complex systems and thrive in a dynamic cross-functional team environment. Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Candidate must be flexible, adaptable, available to work on weekends or overtime as needed, and able to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Familiarity with New Brunswick and DasGip fermentation equipment and control systems is a plus.
